Pepper Mill

How to make your own Pepper Mill from Olive wood with an internal ceramic grinder. You can get as creative as you like with the shape on the wood lathe and the material you use. Just make sure you stay in within given length of the mechanical grinder. When choosing a wood make sure it’s compatible with food. Obviously stay away from anything that is toxic. Maple or curly maple is always a good choice along with Oak. As for a finish make sure it’s food safe too. With this same design you can use the grinder for Salt too.  The Salt & Pepper Grinder Project is not too difficult, so have fun with it…. I used Olive wood, which turned out nice, easy to work with, and beautiful grain. I really like the grinding mechanism from Craft Supplies USA. The adjustment at the bottom is way better…( I think), this type is called a Burr grinder.

Burr Grinder, is a mill used to grind hard, small food products between two revolving abrasive surfaces separated by a distance usually set by the user. When the two surfaces are set far apart, the resulting ground material is coarser, and when the two surfaces are set closer together, the resulting ground material is finer and smaller. Often, the device includes a revolving screw that pushes the food through.

Salt, pepper, and spice mills, essentially the same as coffee mills, usually do not have a handle, the entire top rotating instead. While this is less convenient, only a few turns are required to grind enough. The ground product falls directly onto the food being seasoned. Also being a burr grinder manually will not heat up the content which in some cases affect the the product.
